A Universal Translator for Parents: How to Understand Teens (and others) When They Say “I don’t know” or “I’m fine” with Alan E. Fruzzetti, Ph.D.
Communication and connection can be so hard! When our teenage or young adult kids (or partners, friends or others) do not communicate much, or don’t always communicate accurately, it is difficult to understand and then easy to invalidate them (and hard to validate), which creates a lot of negative emotion and disconnection.
This webinar is intended primarily to give parents a way to begin to understand what they might not be saying but might mean when they say things like, “I’m fine” or answer questions with, “I don’t know.” Sometimes these statements are accurate, and often they are not. So, how can we tell? What can we do? This webinar is designed to give you a basic “universal translator,” an approach to cracking the code and beginning to understand what might be more accurate.
When we understand, validating is much easier! And, of course, validating soothes the other’s emotions and builds connection. So, we will also look for what we might be missing when we go on autopilot (react) and how we can tune in more effectively.
